Origins

If Necessity is the Mother of invention then Frustration is definitely the father.

Frustration with poor quality counter pens (also known as Security Pens) motivated inventor, James Redfern, to create a new generation of pens called Speed Grrips attached to a new counter pen stand called Defender.

James’ son who worked in a bank at the time commented how awful and frustrating the bank’s security pens were. They ran out of ink quickly; peeled off the counter easily; cables snapped; and they were difficult to refill... And millions of other people in Post Offices, Airports, Financial Institutions and Government offices were experiencing the same thing.

After interviewing two dozen bank employees James saw the liabilities of the existing products were common.

They were

ugly,
not brandable,
available only in black,
easily breakable,
impossible to repair,
quick to run out of ink, and
a pain to refill!

Refills had to be ordered and inventoried somewhere – and not everybody in the bank knew where they might be kept.

It was clear to James that planned obsolescence and uninspired design was the theme among the various models of counter pens available. The problems and liabilities were obvious but what were the solutions to all the problems?

The new product to be developed had to be:

Simple to operate
Bullet proof
Visually attractive and brandable
Available in colours
Economic

At the time James knew the best selling pen in the world was the BIC ‘Crystal’... the clear barrelled disposable stick pen... and it still is with almost 2 BILLION! –(Yes that’s with a B) – pens produced annually. The BIC Crystal is durable and reliable, available everywhere and inexpensive. James knew it HAD to be the refill for the revolutionary creation.

It took three years of design, prototyping and testing to arrive at the combination of Speed Grips and Defender added up to the BEST counter pen ever offered to businesses for customer service counters.
